Lek Gek Ngoh (Anne), whose roots lie in Dong Ling, Jiedong County, was influenced by her Teochew music and culture-loving father since childhood and began to like Teochew Opera. In 1999, she was introduced by friends to a Teochew opera singing class and began to participate in the activities of Teochew Opera performance groups. She started learning opera movements and even travelled to Shantou, China, to learn from teachers there. Besides Teochew opera, she has also learned Nanjing Yue opera.
In 2004, together with other opera-loving friends, she formed a Teochew opera group, which performed at community centres, private banquets and were even invited to perform at churches. In 2007, during the Mid-Autumn Festival, they represented the Yuhua Community Club Art Ensemble to participate in the first ever Singapore International “Lion Award” vocal chorus and dance competition and were awarded the Gold Prize. In 2010, the group put up a performance
Since 2009 (change if not right), Anne has been teaching Teochew opera singing at community clubs and residents’ committee centres and has also started teaching performance arts classes.
